I talked about exploration in my other post (pushing limits). I was working on one of my favorite pieces, a wall on canvas, in which I punched a hole. For this piece I used wallpaper, a real outlet and stucco. Originally, I was going to hang something over the whole I hit in my “wall”. I wanted to show that the picture I was going to hang was previously somewhere else, so I painted a brown rectangle, which I was meaning to paint over. But, I liked it this way.
I liked how a rectangle could convey so much information. I found myself staring at it. The part where I punched the hole somehow appeared more two-dimensional than this block of color. Around this same time I was listening to Hornet by Fox Academy (Fox Academy - Hornet (youtube.com)). The album cover for rabbit resonated with me. When sketching and playing around with new ideas, I thought I would try this out again. So this is what I did with some roses. I loved it, again.
It was not only the sharp edges that appealed to me, there was more. I had been doing a lot of collage work at life in 3d, it allowed me to tell a more rounded story, one of opposites. I had also been trying to hide or otherwise cover up things in my more experimental work. This work found me at the intersection of a lot of things I had been trying. It just worked for me.
I started exploring the human story behind places. Taking very close up, private or flash photos and combining them with pretty flat and colorful locations. These are personal stories for me. They were not premeditated, they originated from a sincere exploration. It was about listening to impulses and letting them pass through my existence in order to transmogrify them into these works. I think all art is about listening.
